There’s no rulebook that says when it’s the right time for a company to create guiding principles or company values. However, many people, like Fhiwa Ndou, Director of Global Operations at MassChallenge, believe that it’s important for companies to develop guiding principles from day one.

Headspace’s Happiness-Oriented Office (3.5 min)

Meditation app Headspace has created their Santa Monica office with a healthy, mindful ethos. Designer Kelly Robinson says, "Every design decision is connected to sustainability, health and wellness." Four features of the office - the silent room, meditation pods, boardroom and lookout - are explored. Tips on how to incorporate these design elements into your own office are included. 

Making Values Visible at Breather (3.5 min)

With over 100 employees across three countries, Breather wanted to find a way to recognize each other’s work and stay connected. Their department ambassador team meets bi-weekly to share ideas and celebrate successes of life at Breather. One of their recent ideas was to use a slackbot to create visibility around their company values. Being able to easily commend someone for acting on a company value has helped them integrate their values into daily life at work. 

How Automattic Manages Open Vacation (4 min)

With a completely distributed team of nearly 500 “Automatticians” in more than 50 countries, Automattic values the work people produce, not just hours that are put in. Lori McLeese has been the HR Lead at Automattic for the past five years working to make sure that Automatticians are set up to succeed. As a Human Resources expert, McLeese shares her wisdom on a popular topic affecting companies today - vacation policies.

The Cost of On-Site Childcare at Patagonia (6 min)

Patagonia has provided on-site childcare for an impressive 33 years. CEO Rose Marcario says, “In particular, offering on-site child care, we believe, is the right thing to do for employees, working parents, and the life of the workplace.” While it may be a great benefit, it’s not unreasonable to wonder what it costs to provide. Marcario breaks down the costs recouped in tax benefits, employee retention and engagement.
